Introduction
1.1.
The confocal microscope system covered by this specification is intended to provide the Pirbright Institute in Surrey, UK (hereafter referred to as ‘Pirbright') with multidimensional multimode confocal imaging capabilities, including the possibility of superresolution microscopy. The microscope will become part of the multi-user core Bioimaging facility at Pirbright.
1.2.
This system will be used to study a variety of fixed and live specimens including cultured cells, tissue sections and tissue explants. The user will have the option of imaging all of these sample types in either confocal mode or superresolution mode (if applicable).
1.3.
The microscope will be used to conduct globally significant cutting edge research in the area of veterinary and medical virology under Specified Animal Pathogen Order level 4 (SAPO4) and Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens level 3 (ACDP3) high containment conditions.
1.4.
The confocal microscope system will be installed directly into a bespoke Bioimaging Suite in the new, state of the art containment building at the Pirbright site, before the pathogen licenses are implemented.

Introduction
