The Observatory, set up early in 2010, collates, interprets, disseminates and seeks to improve statistical and qualitative
evidence about the health, and health and social care of people of all ages with learning disability in England. Central to its
approach has been bringing together conventional statistical public health skills with expertise in disability research, health
and social care policy and learning disability service management. This highly integrated team has been able to produce a large
volume of work delivering high quality syntheses of the full range of evidence about care needs and provision packaged
appropriately for the commissioners, care providers and wider national strategists able to act on it.
