The European Spallation Source is a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) committed to the goal of building and operating the world leading facility for research using neutrons. Once constructed in Lund, Sweden, it will provide new opportunities for researchers in a broad range of scientific areas including life sciences, energy, environmental technology, cultural heritage and fundamental physics. It will be an accelerator-based facility producing neutrons for a large array of advanced instruments. Construction started in July 2014, aiming at the source producing first neutrons around 2020.
The UK is a partner in construction of the ESS alongside 15 other European countries, and has committed significant funding for construction.
STFC is managing the UK contribution to ESS, which includes in-kind contributions to construction of the facility. The ESS Active Cells Facility is one such contribution and will be delivered by RACE - a department of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority.
The Active Cells Facility will be used to handle and process spent target monolith components before shipment to an external waste storage facility. The components extracted from the monolith will be activated and therefore operators must carry out processing tasks remotely from a local control room. Component processing tasks are to include size reduction, segregation, interim storage and preparation for shipment to an off-site waste storage facility.
The Active Cells Facility will contain a set of integrated systems to meet the user requirements for containment and shielding, remote handling, size reduction, safety and control. The RACE project team are progressing towards critical design review for those systems and following successful review, tender invitations will be issued for a range of scopes including detailed design, manufacture, delivery to site, installation and commissioning.
This Prior Information Notice is being issued to notify interested companies that STFC are organising an Industry Day on 22.11.2016 which includes an optional afternoon visit to the RACE facility at UKAEA, Culham.
